Social Distancing, Not Sharing and Kindergarten...OH MY!
Funded Nov 27, 2020Now that our students have been able to get back into the classroom, the impact of the materials supplied to our classroom family has been overwhelming. Our students are beginning readers meaning many of them are just getting the appropriate skills when it comes to handling and working their way through the pages of a book. Our students often come from low income families and some lack the exposure to books that others are privileged enough to have. We have used many of these materials to simply introduce a love for books and reading.
In our classroom, we are learning text and print concepts such as how to hold the book, how to track print, how to use graphic text features (pictures, illustrations, etc...), and how to turn letters and sounds into reading and writing simple words. Our students are given daily opportunities to use the classroom library to build and enrich their literacy skills. They pull books and keep them in their individual reading sacks to peak interest in things they want to learn about.
While all students love the classroom library and the ability to go and grab books, I find that the kids who lack exposure at home love the availability the most. They beg to get new books and can't wait to grab anything new we add to our shelves.
Thank you all for providing our kids with this amazing gift!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Smith
