Escape the Classroom - Problem Solving to Build Critical Thinking Skills
Funded Sep 24, 2017Today we did our first Escape the Room type Breakout Box in my classroom. The students were excited as soon as they walked in the room. Having 30 16-year-olds excited to come into English class is a feat in and of itself, however, that was just the beginning. After laying down the ground rules and allowing them to pick their own groups, the kids worked furiously to try and be the first to open the locks. The cheer that came from the team that figured out the final clue was so loud that I apologized to the classroom next door.
The kids all asked that we do this type of activity again (every day if we could - which...we can't). They were using the text to find the answers, engaging actively with close reading skills, themes, symbols, motifs, and vocabulary. It was a fun experience for all of us and I can't wait to do it again!
I have two classes of juniors and we discussed next time having the students make all of the clues for the other class, then timing them to see which class can unlock their boxes the fastest. Next time we will also be using the USB drive and the UV lights as well.
Thank you again for all your support. The kids really loved the experience!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Tighe
