Kindles Are For Kids!
Funded Jan 27, 2012Dear Friends and Supporters,
The Thanksgiving season is upon us and my thoughts have turned to you. I want to thank you again for your earlier support for the project to bring the first Kindle e-readers to my class. It was a complete success. I want you to know that I am still using those e-readers to great effect and the children are still benefiting from the unique choices it gives them. Students now have nearly 50 various books to choose from.
The program that you supported was so successful that in the next week I will be launching another Kindle e-reader acquisition drive. Please wish me luck with that.
I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving this year.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Stenzel
Kindles for Kids
Funded Mar 9, 2016Dear Donors,
The Kindles that you have made available to my class through your generosity have really made an impact in learning and the enjoyment of reading in my classroom. As you can see from their pictures posted on our website they are just thrilled to have a chance to use this technology to access reading at their level. They enjoy the X-Ray function of the kindles and gladly put in time with reading books in this light -weight, easy-to-hold form factor. I often see students using the dictionary function to do a fast look-up. I almost never saw that with paper books even though I have rows of dictionaries just waiting to be pulled off the shelves. The Kindle design makes word study just so convenient and a casual non-burdensome natural activity. My kids are getting smarter than ever as they read.
As a teacher, I love that the pages of the books they read on the Kindle will never yellow and will never tear. I love that my students may adapt the typeset and font to their own preferences. They have a way to take notes in the Kindle as they read, and may highlight to their heart's content without ruining the book for later use. The X-Ray function allows them to pick a character for a report and discover the location of the chapters that really focus on the development of their character for rereading. The Kindle does not supply the answers, it drives them to reread the material in an efficient manner to obtain and synthesize the answer.
The Kindle is an empowering tool and we have you to thank for empowering so many more students with this wonderful gift. My class and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You are our Room #8 Heroes!!”
With gratitude,
Mr. Stenzel
