I teach in an area where distance learning is unfortunately a reality. Since our area is approaching the highest tier of COVID-19 cases in our state, we must be fully remote.
Unfortunately, in my school district many of our students lack the supplies and the internet access that is required to fulfill their academic needs at home. Therefore, I am collecting the supplies needed to provide each student with a "Distance Learning Tool Kit." these include scissors, binders, paper, binder rings, Insect Box Bug Magnifier and more.
My goal is to provide my students the essential supplies they need to succeed in a distance learning environment. Each kit will provide:
*School Supplies (appropriate for their grade level)
*STEM Learning Kit
*Social-Emotional Learning Kit
Last spring, when our state shut down, we learned how much our students were dependent on teacher-provided school supplies. This severely limited the type of assignments we could provide.
STEM based activities will give them a hands-on approach to their subjects. The STEM learning kit provides various objects such as balloons, rubber bands, and a small bug box with a magnifying glass that is detachable, to name a few. Students and their families will be able to participate in various STEM activities, including “The Balloon Powered Car Challenge.” Students and their families will construct a balloon powered car using both supplies from their STEM kit and other supplies they find at home like LEGOs, plastic bottle, etc. Once it is completed, students will have age appropriate questions to respond to regarding the project and their experience as they went through the design process. Students will also be given the option to submit videos to compete in a school-wide challenge for prizes. This virtual challenge is designed to encourage students to be actively engaged in the learning process, as well as create a sense of community as they all participate together, despite being apart.
