SiFi Summer
Funded May 11, 2018Again, I want to thank you for your donation to our "SiFi Summer - Stop Summer Learning Loss" project.
Summer learning loss is an important phenomenon for teachers to consider prior to sending students home for the summer and with your help we at SBCS were able to send our rising 7th and 8th graders home with materials to read.
One of several strategies I implemented this summer was to ask students (and parents) to complete a summer reading assignment of an inspiring science fiction story, The White Mountains. Summer reading loss is cumulative, our children do not typically catch up in the fall. Many of their peers are progressing with skills while some are making up for their summer learning loss. By the end of 6th grade, children who lose reading skills during the summer are on average 2 years behind their peers. We are going to do everything we can to combat this.
The White Mountains was a big hit with most of my kids too. Many came to our Open Library meetings throughout the summer for additional supports.
We are yet to understand the cumulative benefits to students or the improvement this assignment made in reading data as we have not yet formally assessed students. But I know, without a doubt, students were reading this summer, because of you.”
