Summer learning loss is an important phenomenon for teachers to consider prior to sending students home for the summer. One of several strategies I intend to implement this summer is to ask students (and parents) to complete a summer reading assignment, together, of an inspiring science fiction story, The White Mountains. Summer reading loss is cumulative, our children do not typically catch up in the fall. Many of their peers are progressing with skills while some are making up for their summer learning loss. By the end of 6th grade, children who lose reading skills during the summer are on average 2 years behind their peers. We are going to do everything we can to combat this.
