  • EGM Eagles Need New Non-Fiction!

    Funded Oct 3, 2024

Thank you so much for your very generous support of our Donors Choose request! Your kindness and dedication to excellence in public education contributed to the full funding of our "EGM Eagles Need New Non-Fiction!" project. The average age of the non-fiction section in our school library is 2004 (over two decades old!), and I have been working diligently to bring our collection up to date. Current and engaging information about a wide variety of non-fiction topics such as sports, dinosaurs, space and planets, biographies, animals, etc. will attract students to that section of the library and increase their learning by leaps and bounds.

Reading non-fiction texts help students develop and increase content-area vocabulary, gain access to diverse topics, develop background information, and make connections to the natural world. Exposure to new and interesting non-fiction books in our school library provides opportunities to students who may not have these types of books in their homes or who do not have the means to get them from the public library. Your support will help foster curiosity and critical thinking skills among our young readers - a truly invaluable gift! We greatly appreciate your support of our students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Powers

  • Bulldogs Need Diverse Books

    Funded Jul 7, 2020

Thank you so very much for helping to fund my "Bulldogs Need Diverse Books" DonorsChoose grant request. I inherited a very outdated library from a retired librarian last year, and have been working hard to update our collection with books that reflect our diverse student population.

It is extremely important for students to be able to see themselves in the characters of the books they read. Your generous gift has allowed students of color to feel more welcome in our library when they see the covers of our new books on display. They now know that they can find stories that reflect their life experiences in our library, and this is an amazing gift!

Several of the titles we received focus on social-emotional learning, and I've found that the books that deal with kindness and showing acceptance of others (such as "Mommy's Khimar", "Be Kind", and "I Walk with Vanessa") to be especially popular with our students. Thank you for gifting us with books that will help my students continue to develop empathy and advocate for inclusion.

I sincerely appreciate you taking the time and devoting your resources to support public school libraries and students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Powers

  • Current Events in the School Library: Time for Kids

    Funded May 31, 2017

Thank you so very much for your generosity! I am an elementary school librarian in an urban community, and we are having a great time learning about the world outside our neighborhood. We have been studying about the difference between fiction and non-fiction books, so I have been using our "Time for Kids" magazines to discuss non-fiction texts (provide true information, contain real photographs, have captions that give facts about the photo, present graphs, etc.) - it is such a beautiful and informative resource for us to explore!

My students are LOVING using "Time for Kids" and have started to ask to read the next edition when they come into the library. With access to the digital edition included with our subscription, I am able to project each issue on the SMART Board for us to read the articles together. The read-aloud feature is wonderful tool to assist with language acquisition and fluency for my Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten & 1st grade students as they learn how to read. Additionally, we truly enjoy watching the videos and playing the interactive whiteboard games that accompany each article. The print resources listed in the Teacher's Guide also help us connect the TFK articles to the books we already have in our library.

As my students develop their reading skills over the course of this instructional year, we will begin to conduct short research projects on non-fiction topics. We are so pleased to have access to "Time for Kids" to assist us in this research. Students have the opportunity to work in library centers each week, and I look forward to adding past editions of TFK to our reading center for them to explore independently! It is increasingly important for our students to become informed digital citizens, and I am so very grateful that your kind gift will assist them in reaching this critical goal. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Powers

I am the librarian at a small (approx. 490 students) public elementary magnet school. Students in K-5th grades visit the library weekly for story time, research, technology skills lessons, and book checkouts. We do not receive any Title I funds, so I am very limited in the amount of technology I can offer my students to prepare them for 21st century learning (we have approx. 20 dated desktop PCs). Our library collection is dated and doesn't currently reflect the diverse learners on our campus. My students LOVE to read and discover, and they especially enjoy hands-on, collaborative activities. My goal is for the library to be a welcoming, fun, and challenging learning environment for all my students, regardless of ability level or background. Thank you in advance for your support of our school! #BulldogsLoveBooks
