  • STEM Bins for Excited Learners!

    Funded Feb 9, 2018

My students were very excited when I explained to them what was in the new box that arrived. I told them it was new materials that we will use to explore and create anything! The STEM bins are located in the classroom where students can access them during any free choice time. They will also have more structured time to use the kits and answers questions as we dig deeper into STEM projects. My steps for next year include making a science notebook that will include a section for STEM bin exploration. They will be able to create drawings of their creations and answer questions.

This morning the students were given free time to play with whatever box they wanted to. One student created a windmill while two other students created a bowling ally. I had several students using the play-doh to create structures. As some students explored, other students became curious and joined them”

  • Let's Get Engaged with Math Materials!

    Funded Jan 25, 2018

We are so grateful for your financial assistance to fund our math materials. We have had the opportunity to use the fraction materials and they have been of great help. Students have been learning all about fractions such as what they even are! Our newest unit has been on equivalent fractions, which means finding what fractions are equal to each other. Students have struggled a bit but using the fraction pieces has been a great visual aid to model which fractions are equal.

We have not used the scales yet but have let other classes borrow them. They have been of great help to those classes as scales are not something that we would normally have in our class. However it is a part of our math standards to know how to measure different items and compare the weights.

The stop watches have been used in math units and every day to time each other for math facts, we have had to learn our multiplication facts. We have also used the beakers a few times to compare the amount of liquid for other math problems.”

  • Oh No! What Did We Forget?

    Funded Dec 13, 2017

Thank you so much for your donations to our class project! My students were so excited when they saw the new pedometers! The ones we had before kept slowly dying on us and trying to replace the batteries just was not working. The students move around so much more outside when they have the pedometers on. Several kids mention walking around the playground just to get steps in. They will even jog in place just to get more steps. The students love seeing how many steps they have taken and enjoy earning brags for their miles. The chart has been a great addition as it is a nice reminder for the students as well as myself to turn in and collect the pedometers at the end of every day.

The liquid water colors have been a wonderful addition to our art supplies. There are some great projects that suggest the liquid water colors, for example using salt and dripping the paint, the colors spread and create beautiful designs. Before we got the liquid water colors, I had take the cake format and placed them in water, attempting to make my own set.”

  • Hands on STEAM with 3D Printing!

    Funded Nov 24, 2017

All of my students have been so excited about the opportunity to use the 3D printer. I am new to 3D printing as well as are my students so we have been spending a little bit of time figuring out how to work the machine. We also decided to find a program on the Internet that would make it a bit easier for the students to create something. We have been using a program called Tinkercad. The student's first project is to make a brag tag to put on their brag tag necklaces. Students earn brag tags from completing activities such as math facts. I am hoping that as a class we can design something bigger. We will be brainstorming ideas together and then I will allow each of the students to create it on Tinkercad. Then as a class, we will vote on our favorite design and print that one.

The great part about this is that it gives the students an opportunity to explore their creative side on a computer. They become the creators and the inventors! So much of our testing is now done on a computer. The more interaction with technology the better! I am hoping that it opens students eyes to the world of technology and the idea that maybe in their future they will work with computers as a job.”

    Mrs. Pinz

  • Ready, Set, Read!

    Funded Sep 18, 2017

Thank you so much for helping fund this project for two class sets of books. These books will be used to help teach students many different reading comprehension skills. The books Castle in the Attic and Streams to the River, River to the Sea will be used as part of a whole class book study through a program called CIA By Read Side by Side. Students will practice skills in their own just right books after watching me model those skills using Castle in the Attic and Streams to the River, River to the Sea. Some of the reading skills they will practice are making inferences, connections, and predictions. Students will also practice skills to gain a deeper understanding about the main character in the book and the genre of each book. We will look at the story elements for each book and how each genre is different. Students will be using their new learning to help discover what the author's message is.”

  • Visual Arts for the Win!

    Funded Apr 1, 2017

Thank you so much for all our new art supplies! I love being able to incorporate art into our classroom as much as possible. It gives students a chance to relax and use their imagination to create something special and unique with little to no expectations that it must be a certain way.

The students were very excited to see all the new supplies. Most of the supplies we had were from previous teachers or were shared with all the other classes in the school. Now we have fresh colored pencils, paint brushes, and paint.

The clay arrived just in time for the students to create mother's day gifts. Instead of bowls, we made clay magnets. The students were given sections of clay and were told to roll it around, then smash it into a flat circle about 1/2 inch thick. Students then used small stamps to press designs into the clay. We created our own glaze to add some color and shine to the magnets after they had dried. We still have lots of clay left! I plan on introducing a pinch pot project to the students this year.

Students use the paint and colored pencils weekly as we work on all different subjects. The India ink will be used to create branches or trees during art and the buttons will be used for a later art activity with other collage materials.”

    Mrs. Pinz

  • Read On, My Children!

    Funded Mar 30, 2017

Having mentor texts has allowed me to present ideas around writing and reading genres/skills to my students by sharing the books with them. We then have conversations around the book about what we notice and how it applies to our current learning. The students recognize that an author is an important person, another teacher that they can learn from.

Having a book display allows me to highlight books that are new, books that tie into the subjects we are studying, and it puts them at a level that the students see all the time. Students gravitate towards the book display through out the day to snag books I have shared with them.

Our new books bins have been a great add to the classroom. The students each have one of their own to keep their reading books and reading notebooks in. This helps students quickly find their books and not lose them. The extra book bins have been used to organize and store math games for the students to use.

The easel has allowed me to make anchor charts with the students as we are talking about new ideas or subjects. I can leave the easel up with the chart on it through out the day so that the students can see it and access the information. Before the anchor chart arrived, I would have to choose between leaving the document up on the projector and not being able to use it the smart-board the rest of the day or taking it down right away, not allowing students to see the co-created chart.”

  • Magnify our Science Learning

    Funded May 25, 2017

Thank you so much for helping my class purchase microscopes. Our class project included 4 microscopes that the students can use and one that we can hook up to the computer and project the image to the screen for the whole class to see. We are excited to go on a nature hike that is on our school property and find bugs and plants to bring back and look at up close with the microscopes. Some other ideas include looking at human hair and animal hair, fabric, wood and other every day items. Another interesting project would to set up bacteria samples and investigate which sample looks worse.”

  • Active Learners = Engaged Learners

    Funded Aug 26, 2016

Thank you so much for your generous donations to fund our class project for my active learners! My students were beyond excited when they saw the different seating options. The standing desks have been a huge hit! I almost wish they all had the option to stand at a desk that was raised up. The wobble seats and t-stools have also been very popular. They are constantly in use, even by other students who come to my classroom for various reasons. The printer is still in the box as we are trying to use up the ink from our old printer. But we can't wait to use it and get great colored copies for our brag tags and certificates.

My active class has logged enough steps that almost all of them have earned a brag tag for the distance of walking from Monroe to Seattle!”

  • Targeting Healthy and Active Kids

    Funded Aug 12, 2016

Thank you so much for your generous donation to my classroom project! The healthy snacks were used as an emergency snack option for students who did not bring snack to school. Sadly, we have pretty much gone through all the snacks already. But I was happy that I was able to provide my students with a healthy option for snack. The flexible seats have been a great hit with my students! They love the ability to go sit anywhere in the room and have a seat that can help them focus and get work done. The students were shocked and excited when I was able to give each of them there own water bottle. It has defiantly saved work time by allowing the students to have it at their desks instead of having to get up and go to the fountain all the time. We have not had a chance to play the scavenger hunt game but are looking forward to exploring around the school.

Last but not least are the supplies for our brag tags! The kids love getting a brag tag for different aspects of learning! They are earning them for how many steps they earn as well as behavior and effort. The steps are set up from city to city.”

It has been a crazy year, but we are finally back to a hybrid schedule for in-person learning. It has been so nice to see my students in person and work on building a better connection with them all. My school is loved by the community for our dedication to the students and families as well as the traditions that we have continued on through out the years. Our school is large and we serve a lot of students, which in turn means money is stretched. Thank you for considering giving to my classroom.
