All of the books and supplies listed are essential for students to have the opportunity to read novels with characters that look like them, have similar lives and experiences and can create text-to-self connections. Using the books requested, students will create interactive notebooks to reflect, analyze and evaluate their readings. Glue sticks, pencils, markers and post-its are the basic supplies needed to continue learning while at home to complete assignments. By having these basic classroom school supplies, such as pencils, scissors, glue and markers, the class has the ability to focus on the content (which is my ultimate goal), while feeling confident in their abilities to complete their assignments with the resources that would normally be provided in the classroom.
Students need access to culturally diverse books that reflect the variance and the unique cultures that make up our nation and world. Inclusive books are urgently needed on our classroom shelves. Books that are non-discriminatory, yet representative of our communities. Having these books will allow students to actively participate in Novel Studies, providing multiple options to choose from. My goal is to have students choose a book based on their interest to read while home learning. There will be questions that will require students to refer back to the novel to answer and provide evidence by citing excerpts from the book, and reflect on their own understanding of the text by summarizing. The books requested are diverse in subject matter, as well as culturally diverse. Studies show that diversity helps to teach students about other cultures. They help to promote empathy and respect for all types of people, and books have the power to encourage students, while enlightening other readers about the truth that they are not privy.
