If you look at the library or cafe set up of any great college or university, you will always see a variety of seating arrangements and work spaces. Students of all ages might decide to work on the floor, at a desk, in a lounge chair, or tucked away in a window nook, but they will be working. Students should not have to wait until high school or college to advocate for work spaces that work best for them. Gone are the days where students can sit in a desk for hours upon hours to complete their work. Especially now, after a year of working from their beds, couches and kitchen tables, we can see that students have the capability to pick their own spot and be successful in completing school work. Through this project, I would like to add more seating and work space options for my 4th graders to be able to build upon their autonomy and decision making skills in the classroom. My hope is that students can advocate, justify, and be respectful of a public learning space for all. This skill can transfer over as they get older and can learn and work in spaces that are best fitting for each of their needs.
