This is a collaborative interdisciplinary PBL project for students that will be completed in their 8th-grade social studies and science classes. The focus of the project is to get students ready to be active participants in their education in a way they haven't yet been required to do. Our 8th-grade students have spent just as much time off-campus as they have on campus in their middle school careers so they haven't been given the opportunity to showcase their full abilities. After a year and a half of distance learning due to the pandemic, this project will allow our students to return to learn in our classrooms. These supplies will allow their creativity to flow and showcase their learning. Teaching 8th graders about social justice will help them to be more engaged about events in US History as well as relevant current events. More specifically, what is social justice and social justice of marginalized peoples in science fields? Students will be able to collaborate with their classmates—in-person for the first time since 6th grade. They will explore the lives and stories of marginalized populations who, throughout time, have had to overcome obstacles and persevere through extreme circumstances. The project will be completed over the span of approximately a month of the first quarter. Students will engage in a variety of lessons to build knowledge of what social justice is and of marginalized peoples within the field of science. These resources will help students showcase their learning from their social justice projects. They will share their knowledge with their peers and teachers via a mini-museum display.
