Our school is in a 98% poverty demographic. Many do not yet have an interest in reading or writing. I have a little library I have been building for 3 years and furnish it with cool chairs and a rug that they love. They can not wait to get to sit in the small space, even though it means they must be reading. This year, I am implementing literature circles to really get them involved in reading choices and trying to give them more opportunities to forge a love of getting involved in a world outside of the realm of theirs. My students are awesome and I feel that being able to give them the opportunities to experience things through books that they would otherwise not have access to is a starting point to build on their future successes.
