  • Social Emotional Learning With Kimochis

    Funded May 10, 2024

Thank you so much for your generous donation and making it possible for me to share the Kimochis curriculum with my class.

My students loved being introduced to each new character and finding out about their personalities, feelings, favorite foods, and favorite numbers. Since each Kimochi character comes with their own unique personality, students are sure to find at least one they can relate to.

One beloved character is Huggtopus, a purple octopus who is sometimes too silly. With Huggtopus they learned about when it is, and when it is not appropriate to be silly. Huggtopus also teaches about the first step of the Kimochis program's "Keys to Communication," which is using eye contact, a kind voice, and a communication tap.

The characters also have "Kotowazas" (Japanese for sayings/proverbs) which teach about their feelings and interactions. I can tell that the Kimochis are helping my class, because they make connections back to different Kotowazas they learned when having discussions about their feelings or behavior. When I was talking to a student who is working on using kinder words with classmates, that student recalled a Kotowaza and said, "Oh, it's like, 'Friendly faces make friendly places.'"

There is still so much for my students to learn with our Kimochis, and they are so eager to do so. There are still a few characters they are looking forward to meeting and learning from, and now that we have started learning about the seven "Keys to Communication," they are eager to learn and practice all of those too!

Thank you again, for helping make this impact with my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Mar

  • A New, Spacious Rug

    Funded Aug 10, 2022

Thank you so much for your generous donations toward our new classroom rug!

My students and I use our rug everyday for so many things! First, it serves as a gathering place for community circles where we learn more about one another. My students are finally all able to fit in a circle on the carpet together. No one feels squished or left off the carpet. There is also plenty of space for students to sit during read alouds and other learning times. The swirl design makes it easy to assign a spot to each child. My students also love using the carpet for playing games, or taking a quiet break.

Thanks to your donations, my current class has a wonderful new learning space that they love, and I know I will be able to use this carpet for many years to come with my future students!”

  • Fun at Home With Math Games!

    Funded Oct 27, 2020

Thank you so much for supporting my project!

My students were so excited to get their very own math materials to use for distance learning! Thanks to your generous donations, my students are now able to play math games at home to practice and reinforce fundamental math skills! With these materials, they do not have to use their laptops, and it gives them the break they need from their screens. They also enjoyed learning about geometry and attributes of shapes by sculpting pipe cleaners into various polygons.

Thank you again for your generosity and kindness!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Mar

  • You've Got Mail!

    Funded Aug 3, 2020

Thank you so much for your generous donations! With your donations, I was able to get stamps and small, flat, prizes I can mail to my students. I can also send them a card and small gift for their birthdays as well.

My students are happy to get surprises in the mail, and I've even received a few letters and cards in return! They always wonder what I'll be sending next!

This is an unusual school year, and the materials I was able to purchase through your donations have given my students something to look forward to at home! Thank you so much for making this possible!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Mar

  • Ready to Learn From Home!

    Funded Aug 2, 2020

Thank you for your generous donations at the beginning of the school year! With an uncertain start to the year ahead, I wanted students to at least have the basic supplies we would use if we were in the classroom. Thanks to your donations, I was able to make that happen.

My students were thrilled to get their brand new supplies!! They were also surprised and happy when they learned that people they did not know helped get them these materials! My students use their materials everyday. The whiteboards have been so helpful for my students to share their work with me. It gives them a way to share their work in a picture for an assignment, or they can use it to present their thinking to the class.

Thank you so much for helping my class have these basic supplies at home. I know having these materials has helped my students adjust to distance learning, and we will keep using them as we continue to learn this year!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Mar

  • Literacy Centers A-Go-Go

    Funded Mar 1, 2012

I cannot thank you enough for the kindness and generosity you have shown my class through your donations. Your donations have provided new and fun activities that my students love to use! They were so excited to get these new learning materials, and were surprised to hear that so many people made these donations possible.

The games and comprehension activities provide my students with more practice of concepts that they have already learned during the school year. They are able to self-check the answers with their partners, which allows them the opportunity to work cooperatively and independently. When my students are actively engaged in these activities, it allows me time to work with small groups of students who need extra support, especially in reading.

The digital listening center is also making a difference in my classroom. Students who were once reluctant to pick up and read more challenging books are now eager to read along at the listening center. They love to update me on the story, and share their opinions with me when it's time to stop. It has already started building their confidence as readers, and opened them up to new book choices.

This has all been made possible by each of you, and for that I am truly grateful.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Mar

My students attend an elementary school in a community that is highly impacted by poverty. Our students are also from many different language backgrounds and require specialized English language instruction each day in addition to their typical classwork. Many students do not have consistent and concrete learning opportunities outside of school and third grade is the transitional year in which students start using their reading skills to learn new information. While our families and caregivers want to be involved in their children's education, it is not always possible for them to provide both the financial support and volunteer time commitment our school needs to be truly successful.
