The Jason Foundation, Inc., is an organization that is dedicated to the prevention of youth suicide. On their website they state that suicide is the SECOND leading cause of death in youth 10-24, and that the suicide rate for the 10-14 age group has more than doubled since 2006. These statistics are mind blowing and also very heartbreaking. I'd like for my girls to explore mental health, how to communicate well and to overcome various struggles in life through the reading of "Nest" by Ester Ehrlich, which is a novel about a young girl who enters a state of depression after her mom is injured in an accident. They will get to see first hand how our main character copes with and eventually overcomes her depression. They will be using a digital camcorder to keep a video journal as they read in which they will share their thoughts about the novel, personal experiences, and ideas for coping with various issues, with the intentions of creating an encouraging PSA to spread awareness of mental health issues in our youth, in hopes of decreasing those statistics through suicide prevention. Hopefully the PSA that is created will be shared with others that may be experiencing difficulties in their lives and encourage them to seek help. The goal is to help others, but to also teach my girls to be kind to everyone that they come into contact with. Their kindness and encouragement very well may save a life.
