The students in my Math Intervention class are your typical struggling math students. They are all below grade level in computation and concept skills, and they have severe deficits in math fact fluency. Being high school students, they have learned that they are not good at math, which makes it very difficult to motivate them to even try many problems. I have found that my students are truly great kids who just need a chance to prove that they are capable of improving their math skills. My students need an opportunity to prove to themselves that they can improve. I have also found that it is very difficult to motivate my students to work for the entire 85 minute period that meets every other day. Students are in my class in addition to their regular math class, so many students become burnt out on math lessons. Ultimately, some of my students are facing failure for an entire half of a school day, and I need to create a fun atmosphere that will promote learning.
