As an English teacher, I know that words have power. I want my students to know the same thing. My 8th graders start from the first day of class reading and writing, mostly about ideas that are worldly yet connect with their lives or the societal ideals around them. This year, they will not only read different writings, but write about themselves, culminating in a memoir of their own at the end of the year. Our school, as does the world, consists of students from various backgrounds, races, religions, economics, mental struggles, physical struggles, etc. Reading leads to amazing discussions of determination, cultural similarities and differences, the importance of knowledge and so many other ideas...all through the power of words. Perhaps they will even have the desire to use their own words to positively change the world for the better.
