I run an afterschool Chess Club at my middle school. Many of these students come from high poverty areas and do not have access to healthy foods at home for snacks. They often bring in candy or soda or they do not get to eat anything at all after they leave school. I have so many kids who were so excited to sign up for chess club and many of them asked if a snack was provided. These kids not only enjoy this stress free, technology free environment but they look forward to getting some fresh and healthy food. I often bring in fresh fruit for them but cannot provide this all the time. I'm requesting Apple & Eve juices, Healthy Snacks and Bars, and Synder's Pretzels for student snacks in the Chess Club. I have found that when students are presented with healthier choices such as apples, granola bars, low calorie snacks, juices, etc. that they actually choose the healthier foods over candy or soda. Students do want these options and sometimes school is the only place they can get it. Breakfast and lunch are provided free of charge for many of the students in my school but other than that students rarely get a snack after school once they leave. If I could provide a snack every week to these students this would give them one less thing to worry about after school. They can go home with something in their stomachs and feel energized for the rest of the day. It would let them focus on things other than being hungry.
