  • Motivation for the Imagination

    Funded Mar 26, 2021

Thank you for the colored pencils and watercolor paint. We finally got the watercolor paint which was on delay. This year the students are back in school, they love art more than ever. Some students are getting big bags of supplies to take home, others are using these colorful supplies in the classroom.

Students in 5th grade have just finished their portrait projects. They learn the proportions of the face, famous self portrait artists, and how to add blending and shading to their faces. They get to choose what colors best express their emotion as well as learn art vocabulary about monochromatic, analogous and complementary colors as found on a color wheel. Finally they have fun with their background adding geometric or organic designs.

Students love the colors and how they can combine colored pencils with watercolor paint. I've noticed they are very receptive to concrete skill building but they also enjoy discovering new color combinations and letting colors flow with paint. It is very therapeutic.

Next, we students will use collage paper to make imaginative masks. They will combine their ideas of human emotion with animal features.”

    With gratitude,

  • Colorful World

    Funded Jul 13, 2020

Thank you donors for the great art supplies. I was able to give out 60 art kits to students to take home for blended learning this Fall. And now that we have gone fully remote the students can continue to make beautiful art at home with these supplies.

Students follow a sequential curriculum in art class that builds on skills, vocabulary, motor skills and critical thinking. They can also express themselves through color and expression. They are so happy to understand that art takes concentration but that there are different ways to solve an idea.

I was able to give them sets of watercolor, colored pencils, heavy paper suitable for painting, and colored paper thanks to your generosity.

My students lacked any art supplies last Spring. Now I can see the focused attention to details and color. The color I believe is therapeutic and of course they just say " I am having so much fun in art!"”

    With gratitude,

  • Understanding Our Diverse Community through Photography

    Funded Mar 3, 2014

Students enjoyed using the cameras and were amazed at the results. Especially, the black and white photographs made them focus on composition. We spent a lot of time preparing to go out into the community to photograph people in the local stores. The five pictures on the web site are a small sampling of the hundreds of photographs we took. First, students set up still lives with lighting. Next, they photographed each other with different backgrounds and gestures, and they taught their other classmates what they had learned and shared their skills. In preparation, students interviewed their families and found that childhood memories made for the best storytelling. Finally, before we went into the neighborhood we looked at famous photojournalists and fine art photographers to analyze their techniques for composition.

We went in small groups in the afternoons to various shops in the surrounding student's neighborhood. We worked in teams, one student interviewed the shopkeeper and the other took photographs. They took many photos and got great stories. Two other students also took photographs in the store and some of the customers liked having their pictures taken too. We also photographed people on the street and discussed street photography and documentary photography.

The photographs were printed in the art room and then hung up in our Annual Art Show. The students got a lot of good feedback about the subject matter and quality of the work. It was a great way to finish the project. Now I am dreaming of making the whole experience into a book. Hmmm. I have had a chance to use photography for a multifaceted project including, writing, technology, intergenerational stories, community outreach and ART! Wow. Thanks again for helping to make such a unique and meaningful project come to life.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Heffron

The elementary students in this project come from new immigrant families of many religious and cultural beliefs. The Title one school has more than 80% qualifying for free lunch. The photo project will bring the students a better understanding of the formal elements of composing a photograph as well as build a sense of community through stories of immigration in portraits of people in the neighborhood. The students work towards being included in an annual art show where photography will be included.
