We are just building our makerspace in our elementary library. We need a Cricut maker so that students have hands-on access to a tool to help make a positive difference in our school. Students will learn how to use the maker, design skills and technology to meet the needs of our students, classrooms and school.
In our school, students are the makers and will identify and solve real world problems through the makerspace process. This tool will be used in library lessons as well as in clubs and classrooms. School staff, students and parents will submit problems and requests for the students to solve. The Cricut will allow students access to precision cutting relatively easily in order to solve a real world problem. Many of these problems involve elements of math, engineering, art, community service, literacy, etc.
For example, if funded, 6th graders will be working on a vinyl design to create a sensory path in a variety of school areas as well as coming up with a plan to test the feasibility of their plan and materials. The sensory path is a real need in the school as it allows students another outlet for activity and whole brain engagement. Other grades will be involved in making signage and classroom and all school projects including displays, directional signs, and many, many more real world problems. The maker allows us to delve even deeper as it provides the ability to cut quarter inch balsa wood, fabric and many other materials that can be used to meet needs. We are excited for this opportunity for our students to use technology and design to solve issues.
