Through purposeful play, students will be able to explore and navigate through real life experiences and situations as they take on different roles of leadership. This form of play will allow individuals to make meaning out of these experiences in a way that is both rigorous and engaging. Students will be motivated to explore new vocabulary within a given context, practice turn taking and fair ways to play with peers, as well as practice new skills introduced in both writing and math as they write down orders, exchange money, and count objects. In order to create an environment that promotes such play, I want to design a space within our classroom that is focused on role playing. This area will include a play kitchen, along with a space for a play vet clinic, farmer’s market, post office, and hospital. These themed play areas will be changed throughout the course of the school year in order to align with the new units of study and to spark students’ interest. The resources requested for this project will transform our traditional classroom into one that promotes more explorative play. The dramatic play items will allow students to take on the role given and allow them to play with a purpose as they interact as a classroom community. This project will bring purposeful play into our kindergarten classroom, which will promote positive social interactions, develop vocabulary, nurture meaningful learning, and strengthen problem solving skills. Please help me support my students in creating a space that allows for learning through purposeful play!
