New Books for Our Classroom Library!
Funded Aug 24, 2014thank you so much for funding this project. When the box arrived, the kids were so excited to see what was inside. When they saw there were books they were so excited! The books that were purchased were series that were exciting for them and that they couldn't wait to read. We finally have the entire "diary of a wimpy kid" series. I also have the entire collection of Boxcar Children, and other favorites like "the stories Julian tells" and "horrible Harry". Out of everything in my classroom, the most important thing I want my kids to have it an awesome classroom library, and thanks to your generous donation, we now have that :)”

Funded Apr 22, 2014Hi donors, The laptop literally arrived at 2:00pm on April 30th, and I cant wait to thank you! :)
Thank you so much for your support with funding my grant. I asked for a laptop computer, and it was honestly a very expensive item, but it was an item that my students desperately need. In the age of technology, it is impossible to have a classroom function without a computer!! Unfortunately, from September until yesterday, we seemed to make it work.
We had one computer, that was on "life support". It was missing keys, the top part of the screen was flopping around, it would freeze, shut down, and "work...sometimes". We have a brand new smartboard, thanks to my principal, but without a computer to connect to it, we could barely get through one lesson.
As soon as the box arrived, it felt like Christmas... The students were amazed-- how someone could just buy us a computer! Especially someone that didn't know us! When I told the students that Mr. Esterly was a graduate of PS 45, they thought it was even more amazing.
Within one day, with the help of my technology teacher, it was up and running. It is connected to the internet and smartboard. We are starting a new unit in math on Monday, and not only can we access our curriculum's website with speed, but the kids will be able to use the interactive smartboard the way it is meant to be used. :) In social studies, we are starting our unit on immigration- and we will be able to use the internet to research our own family history. We are such a diverse class, it will be amazing to see what we can learn about our native countries and cultures.
I had a conversation about kindness and generosity with my class today. I explained the them how and why donorschoose exists. Its not that our principal doesn't want to buy us these things...but the school has a budget and it is hard to make everyone happy with new things. I have been using donorschoose for about 3 years, and I have had 4 grants funded. Each grant is utilized by the children- each and every year. My child value these "gifts" because they are given from the heart. Thank you donors for believing in the education system, teachers, and most importantly the children of our future. They are so deserving and they should have the best of everything. XOXO”

Seat Sacks!! Please!!!
Funded Dec 12, 2013Dear Donors,
Thank you so much for funding my project for brand new Seat Sacks. You have no idea how much this means to me! My class was so excited when the box came, because they didn't know what was inside! Once I opened it, and they saw they will each be getting a new Seat Sack they were so happy.
My principal was able to use some school money to purchase a few, but not every student was able to get a new Seat Sack this year! In this economy, we take what we can get! :)
With these new Seat Sacks, my students will be more organized with their books and materials. They will learn the responsibility of taking care of things, especially things that were purchased as a gift. I explained to my students what DonorsChoose.org is, and how wonderful it is for teachers and students to be a part of. I am thankful for each and every grant I receive and I cherish the items that are purchased for me. My first grant was for a leveled library and to this day, it is still sitting in my classroom library. My second grant was for a class set of Charlotte's Web, and I have had so many book clubs with those books. This is my third grant, and I will make sure that these Seat Sacks are taken care of and that many classes of students will be able to use them. Thank you for giving to me and my students. I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart, and so do my students.”

Charlotte's Web Book Club
Funded Dec 15, 2011I just want to say Thank You again! You have no idea how much we appreciate what you have done. Thank you for funding my grant for 25 copies of Charlotte's Web plus the Teachers Guide to go with it.
Charlotte's Web is not in the 2nd grade curriculum. I am using this book for enrichment and enjoyment. My kids are absolutely loving it! They love the story (we are on Chapter 3), they love that they are reading "a novel". They love working independently sometimes, with a partner sometimes, and in a small group.
Some days are hectic, and we don't get to have our club meeting. They are so disappointed. Every they ask "Will we read Charlotte's Web today?". I make sure that we definitely have time the next day!
Thank you for giving me this opportunity to do something amazing with my students. They are reading a complex text, thinking about characters and situations, predicting upcoming events. They are having book discussions and they are writing about their reading. This book is definitely going to change the lives of these students! ”

Amazing teacher, Amazing students
Funded Nov 21, 2011Last week we received the materials I asked for! We received a big box of leveled library books! When the door opened, and I saw the two big boxes, it felt like Christmas! I quickly opened the box, and took the books out. We sat on the rug in a big circle and looked at the titles of the books. We did a quick picture walk with some of them and a few students were partner reading with them.
This weekend I labeled them and they are ready to be added into the library for the kids to borrow on their own. We discussed the importance of giving and we spoke about keeping these books in good condition for future children to use.
I can't thank Mr. Serrano, Vera, and DonorsChoose enough! Times are so tough and there is no extra money in the public schools!! This site, and the wonderful donors who choose to contribute, make it possible for teachers to have simple wishes granted!!
Thank you so much for these leveled books!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Gold
