I am mainly requesting books so that my students can even have access to books. Although we have a library on site, students still need access to books daily, rather than once-a-week visits. One thing I've noticed is that students look at reading as "hard work" rather than "fun." I am asking for my books for my students so that they can see reading can be done for pleasure. I am hoping it will motivate them more to persevere in reading. The majority of my class is 2 or more grade-levels below reading level. Though we have a great Intervention program at school to help students with phonics and fluency, I don't have enough amazing books in the classroom to get them excited about reading.
