  • Picture Books for Middle Schoolers?! Yes!

    Funded Aug 13, 2019

Thank you for your generosity and your dedication to rich literacy experiences for 6th graders at Omaha Public Schools' innovative Wilson Focus School. I can't wait to share these stories with my students as we discover ourselves and our world together. You've helped me unleash their potential as caring and informed global citizens.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. F.

  • The Power of 4:1

    Funded May 10, 2019

It is with immense gratitude that we write this letter thanking you for your gracious donation towards our Donors Choose project. The money that you donated went provided the students at Wilson Focus School with engaging and fun prizes used for positive reinforcement. Research shows that behavior changes when students are provided with positive reinforcement for demonstrating desired behaviors. At Wilson Focus School, we explicitly teach and model the prosocial behaviors that are expected from them at school (be respectful, be responsible, and be safe).

Students receive contingent reinforcement when they demonstrate the expected behaviors such as praise and tangible rewards like mechanical pencils, stickers, keychains, etc. Prior to creating our Donors Choose project, we surveyed the students at Wilson Focus School and asked for feedback on the type of reinforcers they prefer. The prizes that we handed out in the past were often not age appropriate or motivating for some of our older students. Using the feedback from the survey, I was able to shop for prizes that are motivating and age appropriate for all students at Wilson Focus School.

Although students do not receive a tangible prize every time they follow the school expectations, these prizes allow us to reward them for going above and beyond at school. Students love the variety of prizes that we have to offer and are motivated to demonstrate positive behaviors. The prizes that we purchased through your thoughtful donations are helping reinforce the positive behaviors that we want all children and staff to exhibit at Wilson Focus School. Having a positive school culture is an important factor in whether or not students and staff feel safe and valued at school. Thanks to your thoughtfulness, we are able to provide students with a safe and positive school culture that places an emphasis on providing positive consequences for good behavior.”

  • Unlocking Learning With BreakoutEDU

    Funded Sep 11, 2018

I'm overwhelmed by the incredible generosity of my friends and family. Thank you for making this a great birthday for me and a great opportunity for my students! I am excited to see what we create together using the BreakoutEDU kits you helped to fund.

I'll post pictures of the results soon.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. F.

Breakout EDU is an educational kit that creates an atmosphere of healthy competition while requiring small groups to listen to each other and collaborate. It encourages teamwork and perseverance. Each kit has a box with a several locks as well as tools to help solve puzzles, such as a UV flashlight and a red lens viewer. Students are presented with a scenario and a time limit to answer a series of questions and puzzles. I need 2 kits so that I can break up a class into small groups. It's like an Escape Room in reverse - instead of breaking out of a room, students work together to solve puzzles to break into the box! According to the company's website, the four C's are emphasized when playing Breakout EDU: critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication. All of our students participate in after-school Enrichment courses. I plan to offer TeamBuilding with BreakoutEDU to 60 students in grades 3-6 this year, in addition to the 60 students I teach in 6th grade. Furthermore, these kits will be available for all teachers at our school to use to generate excitement, divergent thinking, and teamwork in their classrooms.
