We've Got Environmentality - Part 3
Funded Dec 14, 2011Thank you for your generous donation to our classroom. The digital camera is in constant use. I thought we would use it for our Disney's Planet Challenge project, and we did, but we continue to use it. The students used the camera to take pictures for a math walk through our school campus. They used it to take videos of projectiles being launched -- and then they analyzed their pictures. They used it for photos for their 8th grade slide show -- and for the yearbook. The camera honestly is the gift that keeps on giving.
My students are learning about the environment and what they can do to make a difference. Our DPC project was to find and perform small changes that when added up make a huge difference in the environment. The students were able to make high quality public service announcements by using this quality camera.
Decisions that my students make, today and in the future, will be better decisions because of these lessons. These lessons would not have been possible without the support of your generous donation. In years to come, my students will remember making takings pictures and making public service announcements during this year. They will become more responsible citizens and more environmentally conscious individuals.
Thank you for your support in our project.

Funded Dec 13, 2011Thank you for your donation to our classroom. It is affirming to know that you support my classroom. My students have had their eyes open as to what they can do to help the environment. My students now notice and talk about the small changes that they make that will have a profound impact. As a result of your gift the students can see that small changes can make a huge difference.
Decisions that my students make, today and in the future, will be better decisions because of these lessons. These lessons would not have been possible without the your generous donation. In the future my students will remember this year. They will remember their excitement at discovering how a small change, done by many individuals will have a profound cumulative impact. They will become more responsible citizens and more environmentally conscious individuals.
Thank you for your support in our project. We have started a movement that will snowball and have a lasting impact.

Funded Jul 15, 2011Thank you for your support of my project. It is allowing my students to have wonderful, engaging experiences with physics. One of the first things we do as children is to swing -- first as infants, then as toddlers, then as kids and even as adults. It's so much a part of their world, and so comforting, that my students were immediately intrigued by this project. Even those students who tend to shy away from science were energized and engaged in this project.
The scientific method came alive for my students through their study of pendulums. Often things didn't make sense, (does the mass of the bob really have no impact on the period?) but the students worked through their confusion. They struggled a bit, but didn't mind because they were intrigued, engaged and learning.
In the end they came away with a deep, visceral knowledge of pendulums and the scientific method. They also came away with a love for science. We can't do much better than that.
None of this would have been possible without your kindness and generosity. Thank you is not a big enough word, but since it is all we have, we say "Thank you!"”

Mrs. Foote
What's Not to Like? Part 2
Funded Dec 21, 2010When I requested iPads, I knew that they would be an incredible teaching tool that I could use with my students, no matter what subject, grade level or at school I found myself teaching. What I did not anticipate was that having iPads – which provide immediate, portable and simple access to the Internet -- would allow my students to grown intellectually. Having the iPads has shown my students that I, the teacher, am not the holder of all knowledge. I don't have all the answers but rather that I can help them find the answers. By allowing my students to explore appropriate sites and by teaching them to be skeptical consumers of the information they find on the Internet, I am helping them grow intellectually. Due to district issues, we have not been able to use the iPads to the extent that I would like before writing this impact letter. But now that the iPads are back in the classroom and in the hands of the students, my students realize that their classroom has no walls. Although they are young my students see the power of the question. They have access to world class scientists from NASA, medical doctors from John Hopkins and award-winning authors. My students don't run to me to find out the answer to their questions, they run to the Internet and try to find the appropriate person to discuss their issue with. My students' questions have grown in depth and complexity. They are no longer satisfied with a basic answer but instead they dig deeper and deeper. They are becoming experts not only in specific subjects but in the art of research. This mindset and skill set will continue to benefit them throughout life. None of this would have been possible without the generous support you. Your donation has had a profound impact on the students in my class this year, but it will also impact all of my future students. I cannot thank you enough for your gift. Nor can my students. Know that we all will continue to learn, to grow and to positively impact the world thanks to your gift to this project. And, although they don't know it yet, my future students will benefit as well. With humble and grateful hearts, we say thank you. ”

Books! More Glorious Books!
Funded Dec 26, 2010WOW! Thank you! Thank you for your gift! My students and I are excited and appreciative.
Most of my students love to read. But they stay in their comfort zone and read their favorite genre of literature or stories from their favorite time period over and over. Getting my students to expand their horizons and read something different is challenging. Thanks to you, I have the tools the encourage them to step out of their comfort zones and see a whole new world. My students are not only reading for pleasure; they are analyzing the writing, the author's word choice and conventions. They are listening to the voice and understanding the impact that voice has on a story. They are reading other genres and stories from other time periods and finding a new world of words that they were blind to before this project.
You donation has allowed my children to grow. My students are learning not just the mechanics of literacy but also the art. They are learning about history and what life was like – from the eyes of a child their age – in the 1960s and 1970s. I tell them – because I was a child then -- but it's not the same. Reading about the Vietnam War and the 60s and 70s allows them to enter that time and become, just for a little while, a part of that world. None of this would have been possible without you and your gift.
Thank you for your support of my students, my program and for your support of me. It is critical that students are exposed to quality literature, and with your gift they are. Your generosity will have a domino effect – impacting not only these children this year, but future students as well.”

Funded Dec 21, 2010Thank
you for your generous donation of books to my classroom! We are excited by the expansion of our
classroom library.
Most
of my students love to read. Many of
them would stay in at recess and read if I let them. But they stay in their comfort zone and read
the same genre of literature over and over. Through this project, I am able to
help expand their horizons. They are
able to escape the world and get wrapped up in the world of their books. They have a chance to get to know characters
and empathize with them. But my students are not only reading for pleasure;
they are analyzing the writing, the author's word choice and
conventions. They are listening to the voice and understanding the impact
that voice has on a story. They are reading other genres and finding a
new world of words that they were blind to before this project.
You
donation has allowed my children to grow. . My students are learning
not just the mechanics of literacy but also the art. They are learning
about history and bullying and how to get along with everyone – even those who
are not like them. That's a lesson that
is hard to teach but through your generosity, I can do just that.
Thank
you for your support of my students, my program and for your support of
me. These days it can be challenging to access supplemental
materials. It is critical that students are exposed to quality literature,
and with your gift they are. Your generosity will have a domino effect –
impacting not only these children this year, but future students as well.”

Funded Dec 8, 2010Most of my students are now on board with reading. They like it. But they are in a rut, reading the same genre of literature over and over. I knew that if I could get the right book into their hands, the door to the marvelous world of other literature genres would open for them. That book is Here there Be Dragons. Due to your gift I have put that book into the hands of both my reluctant and my avid readers. And all of the children benefit. My students are not only reading for pleasure, but they are analyzing the writing, the author's word choice and conventions. They are listening to the voice and understanding the impact that voice has on a story. They are reading other genres and finding a new world of words that they were blind to before this project.
You donation has allowed my children to grow. My students are learning not just the mechanics of literacy but also the art. They are learning about history and mythology as well, since the author, James A. Owen, does and amazing job of knitting these together.
Thank you for your support of my students, my program and for your support of me. These days it can be challenging to access supplemental materials. It is critical that students are exposed to quality literature, and with your gift they are. Your generosity will have a domino effect – impacting not only these children this year, but future students as well.”

Shrink Your Footprint Part 3
Funded Dec 26, 2010Thank you for your generous donation to our classroom. My students are learning about the environment and energy consumption. On a daily basis, my students notice and talk about energy usage -- and how small changes that they make can have a profound impact. As a result of your gift, their eyes have been opened to the impact that each of them have on the environment.
Decisions that my students make, today and in the future, will be better decisions because of this lesson. This lesson would not have been possible without the support of your generous donation. In years to come, my students will remember their 5th grade in school with delight and with a deepened sense of responsibility to the environment.
Making podcasts empowers my students to communicate their thoughts and ideas to the rest of the world. They are becoming more and more articulate. They are better able to communicate their thoughts and feelings to other as a result of this project.
Thank you for your help and support. While we struggle with budget cuts on a daily basis, we have found an oasis of support in your generosity.
Wishing you all good things!”
