The students in my classroom are beautifully diverse and represent many backgrounds and countries. Unlike our classroom, children's books traditionally have a narrow focus. Information compiled by the Cooperative Children's Book Center found that 73% of the children's books written in 2015 featured main characters that were white. Another 12.5% featured animals or objects. That doesn't leave much room for my students to see their faces and experiences reflected in books. The 3rd grade students in my classroom are growing readers eager to see more of their faces and experiences represented in our classroom library. This project will make that possible.
