Currently, all the children in my classroom have varying degrees of sensory processing issues as well as many with autism as a diagnosis. It has been proven that hammock seating and hanging seating soothes, relaxes, increases concentration, and reestablishes balance to the vestibular system.
Sensory integration focuses on three primary senses- tactile, vestibular, and proprioceptive. By being able to provide alternate seating, we will get better concentration in return. It will create an environment where our students with these sensory needs are more comfortable to express themselves and more able to focus. This is a huge need in our classroom for all the children.
Temple Grandin, who is on Time Magazines 100 most influential people in the world, is a strong proponent of this type of device as well. She developed a hug machine in college after a childhood realization when she saw cows going into a squeeze machine for inoculations and they instantly calmed down. This calm can also be met with this varied seating due to their shape. They cocoon the user and help reduce overstimulation and physical feelings of anxiety.
There are many more reasons to support the use of alternate seating, but these are the two that stand out as most beneficial for my classroom.
