Last year we started seeds in cups with moist paper towels. It was a great experiment as we watched the roots and stems grow from our little seeds. As the plants grew, so did the students' minds! We wanted to take the next step- switching out the paper towels with dirt, planting them in the ground, and harvesting the vegetables! Unfortunately, we were not prepared with the proper supplies to take the next step (greenhouse, dirt, tools, etc). However, the students were over the moon to be bringing the seedlings home to show their families and to plant on their own.
I've never seen the students more proud than when they were checking the growth of their seeds!
Wow! We loved to talk about our plants, document the growth, track the growth through illustrations, and write about the growth and what we will do with the vegetables when they are ready to pick. We learn a lot about healthy eating choices in first grade and this matches perfectly with that curriculum. The students loved showing their plants to their classmates and other teachers. Growing our own vegetables gives us endless inspiration for writing, illustrating, discussion, observation, reading and math!
By having a greenhouse and supplies, it will allow us to grow different plants throughout the year. Then, we will be able to give the plants as gifts throughout the year! We can use the plants to say thank you to special teachers, friends or family members. This will encourage the students to think about others!
This project will teach patience, planning, kindness and teamwork for my kiddos who struggle socially and behaviorally.
