Project Lit Book Club
Funded Jun 17, 2020Book clubs are the key to transforming my classroom. I want to create a classroom where I can mesh choice reading and core texts. My overall goal for all of my students is to make them readers, giving them time and opportunity to find novels where they are the focus, and the pages show people that look just like them. Because of this passion, I have also started a chapter of Project Lit this school year. My goal is to get current, contemporary novels into the hands of students in the school I teach, through both choice reading and book clubs. And to eventually make these book clubs a space where students, teachers, administrators, and community members come together for the common goal of reading and discussion.
In order to make any of this happen, however, a well-stocked and ever evolving classroom library is a necessity, and a grant of this magnitude will help this happen so much faster than I could on my own. My goal now is to curate a classroom library with resources so my students can see themselves, their own lives, in works from not only their own backgrounds but hopefully backgrounds of others. My goal is that they can see we are all interconnected via literature and that novels have a meaning and a purpose.
With your generous donations - I can continue to add class sets of novels so I can run book clubs both in my own classroom and the Project Lit book club I run after school.”

Funded Aug 27, 2020There are not enough words to describe my gratitude and appreciation for you incredibly generous donations!!
This isn't just about pages or words or books. This is about finding reflections, examples, a path, however imperfect, that resembles your own. This is about finding characters that are just like my students in the pages. This is the belief that every student deserves to have these moments, and access to material to find them. I have students who walk into my room as sophomores or seniors in high school NEVER having finished a book cover to cover. And for a great portion of my career I fed into this mindset, assigning curriculum novels and hoping for the best. In the past two years, I have found confidence in the vision I want to take in my teaching, and I know I need to grow, the priority being creating a classroom where the love of reading is central and the access to books is abundant. Because of your incredible donations - I will be able to continue my goal of choice reading my classroom.”
