Funded Sep 6, 2024Beyond excited to bring this unique opportunity to Grade 8 students at BMS later this year! Dissection confirmed my love of science and set me on a pathway of curiosity and eventually to work in labs in Kendall Square which helped me realize my passion for me teaching science. With your generosity you are providing materials for a fantastic after school enrichment experience that may be the catalyst for a student to pursue a STEM career! Wow! Stay tuned for photos.”

This classroom project was brought to life by The Gates Foundation and 17 other donors.Authentic Pipetting in Middle School Science
Funded Nov 26, 2023Thank you again for your generous support through donations. Students have begun to learn skills related to pipetting and measurement. As we near the end of the year, the focus will be centered on using the test tubes and pipettes that were generously donated. One class recently helped me calibrate the pipettes and they were giddy with excitement when they were learning to hold and control the pipette. Some students were naturals and got into the momentum and rhythm quickly while other are still navigating the nuances of the soft and hard "pushes" of the plunger. Wherever the students are with their skills, what matters most is they are on the pathway to learning authentic scientific skills that may be used in myriad labs and research facilities worldwide. My Grade 8 students are obtaining a key advantage in the STEM field at a young age and they will transfer this skill in High School Biology, summer internships, and their unique post-High School path to success.”

Increasing STEM Literacy in the Science Classroom
Funded Dec 26, 2022Thank you for your generous support that allowed me to add books from the Science Comics Series to my classroom library. My school participates in the DEAR program (drop everything and read) during a 25-minute block after lunch. This year, many students brought books to read from home or the school's library. Some students would engage in a classroom library book. Some would grab a Dictionary or Thesaurus ... reading was not in their plans. By introducing the Science Comics series into my classroom, more reluctant students were engaged in the reading initiative. More students were asked to (ugh!) stop reading in order to transition to the next class. More students were asking to borrow the books to finish overnight. More reluctant readers were engaged, too! Many ML students (multi-language) were reading the pictures and used translation resources to look up words. No matter how you categorize it, more students were reading! Students were reading standing up, under desks, with/to peers, and students created a wait-list for many of the books: Cats, Wild Weather, and Coral Reefs which were the favorites for a few weeks. Because of your generous support, more students were reading and I cannot thank you enough.”
