First grade expectations have never been higher. Children must learn to read, write, communicate, spell, collaborate, show initiative, persevere, and problem solve in everything they do. And many times they must do it all from the confines of their very small desks! As an educator, I want to fully embrace the energy and enthusiasm that students have for learning and, using the mountain of research that shows the positive impact of physical movement, help them achieve and grow at the highest levels.
All too often, children are told to sit still and be quiet, when what they really need is to get up and MOVE! As 6 and 7 year olds, my first graders really need opportunities to integrating movement into our daily activities. Many students come to school disregulated from problems at home or on the bus. Some students experience quite a bit of stress or anxiety. By providing ways to balance themselves both physically and emotionally, while at the same time activating their minds, you would be helping them grow into the next generation that can learn and grow no matter what obstacles are put in their way!
Significant brain research shows that being active during learning, both between and during lessons, activates the brain and makes learning more efficient. We will be utilizing this Body, Brain, Behavior (B3) connection to help us grow academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. BDNF (Brain derived neurotrophic factor) is a protein in the brain that is boosted by physical activity. This in turn drastically increases the brain function to recall, problem solve, make connections, and form short and long term memories. By integrating movement and physical activities into our learning, including regular brain breaks, we will increase BDNF and become stronger, more effective learners.
