Deforestation and the Amazon Rainforest!

Funded Mar 1, 2019

Thank you for your generous donation! Your gift to our classroom will enrich our students' minds in more ways than you know. It can sometimes be challenging for children to fully understand a topic that they have had no experience with. For example, our students live in an urban area, and our most recent Literacy unit was about deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest. Reading books that take place in the rainforest with characters that they can relate to will help our students better understand the part of the world they're learning about, even if they have never been there.

In our classroom, reading is a huge part of our daily routine. Students read every morning after completing their morning routine, they visit the school library once a week (and the classroom library every day!), they have daily homework assignments that require close-reading skills, and they enjoy several independent reading blocks each week during which they can explore a text of their choosing. Furthermore, third graders are starting to tackle complex word problems during Math instruction, which is aided by their practicing of close-reading skills during our Literacy instruction.

One of our students in particular is enjoying the books immensely - his parents are from Peru and have visited the Amazon Rainforest many times. Reading these books truly helps him connect with the childhood his parents had, and the experiences they had growing up in Peru. Thank you again for providing our students with meaningful learning opportunities!”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Marti
