My first graders are inquisitive, thoughtful, and full of wonder. They love hands-on experiences and come to school each day, ready to learn. The majority of my students come from low-income homes and have to deal with the stress of poverty everyday. My students come to school seeking a safe learning environment. My project has been created to ensure that my students have a safe, positive, calming corner readily available when they experience overwhelming emotions. One student at a time will be able to check into the calming corner, they will be provided with a five minute timer to help them reset. The calming corner will also have a basket filled with sensory toys and stress relief items. It is important to teach children how to keep themselves in control of their emotions. When children feel an overwhelming sensation of anger, sadness, anxiety, or frustration, they may become confused or overwhelmed. The calming corner will never be used as a punishment. This space will provide an opportunity for students to learn strategies to calm themselves down so that they can return to learning, cool, calm, and collected!
