My advanced 8th grade ELA students are up for a challenge in what they read. Many of the available sets of novels for book clubs at my school are written by white authors which limits the amount of diversity my students experience reading as a group. By having enough copies to hold book clubs for Just Mercy my 8th grade students, we can delve into more diverse texts. Additionally, we can connect the text with U.S. History and even current events. The young adult adaptation will be perfect for these adolescent scholars.
