  • California Ocean Water Pollution Project

    Funded Jan 13, 2016

From all of us in Mrs. Borstel's Chemistry 1st period class, we want to sincerely thank you for your support for our California Ocean Water Pollution Project. We are especially excited with our incredible new test equipment that will allow us, the students, to perform numerous water quality experiments on ocean water samples from numerous LA beaches. We will apply our biology and chemistry knowledge to assess the impact our society is having on one of our most amazing natural wonders in California, our coastal waters and its associated biosphere of fish and plant life.

Your generosity helped us purchase classroom-grade and professional-grade water testing equipment, a centrifuge, a hydrometer, and oil test paper. This equipment will help us measure several characteristics of our local ocean water to determine how pollution has impacted the various beaches across the LA area. As an example, we will measure each ocean water sample's pH, CO2, and O2 levels to determine which beaches have ocean water that promotes fish and plant life and which beaches have levels that are being impacted by society's pollution. In addition, we will measure the salinity, water hardness, turbidity, alkalinity, nitrate level, and the amount of oil present in the ocean water to determine if discharges from sewage treatment plants, factories, LA area shipping activities, and storm runoff from city storm drains are impacting the salt levels in the area coastal oceans.

It is hard to put in words how excited we are to conduct these experiments with this new equipment and to combine our experiments' results in order to determine which beaches are being impacted by pollution and which beaches are more friendly to ocean life.

    Thank you for your help.”

  • Heart of the Matter

    Funded Mar 9, 2016

Thank you so much for the heart model you donated to us. The heart model made such a difference to our class by allowing us to visualize different parts and also helped us study the heart more thoroughly and clearly. Studying this heart model definitely helped raise my test grades, so I cannot thank you enough.

With this model, our class was able to study for the practicals efficiently. Students were excited that they were able to locate the atria, the ventricles, the arteries, and the veins! Without the donation, we wouldn't have been able to do so.

    Thank you again!

  • Materials for New Chemistry Class!

    Funded Sep 15, 2015

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your amazing contributions to my classroom! We have already received and used the 125 mL Erlenmeyer flasks, thermometers and syringes in our gas unit. The 1L Erlenmeyer Flasks and mole set will be used in future units when we study phase changes and stoichiometry The Chemicals will be used on several occasions throughout the year - for the activity series, single replacement reactions, acid-base reactions and a flame test.

Your donations to my classroom will help provide opportunities for my students that they would not otherwise have experienced. I am so excited to share these resources with my students as I continue to help them work cooperatively and think critically. It is my goal that all my students have multiple hands-on experiences in science and develop a love and passion for the natural world. I am so grateful for your generosity, commitment to excellence in education, for funding my project.

    With warmest regards and”

  • A Cut Above: Anatomical Dissections

    Funded Dec 31, 2015

Thank you so much for you donations towards our mats, kidneys, and fetal pigs. These gifts have been so helpful in this class for a myriad of reasons. First, we are able to better understand the material. We recently had a heart dissection and the mats we received were extremely helpful in furthering our understanding. They made it easier to identify the different parts of the heart and how they connect. Without them, the dissection would've been a lot more difficult and frustrating. We look forward to more dissection thanks to the pigs and kidneys that were donated.

The fact that there are people we don't even know who we are that care about us enough to donate means the world to us. Being able to have a hands-on experience in this science class is something that we are grateful for everyday. Our positive experiences are all due to your generous donations. The change in students after being able to dissect and participate is amazing to see, and this experience of being a donors choose recipient has been so rewarding. Thank you again for such a generous donation and we look forward to a year of many more dissections all thanks to you!

  • Dissection Tools for New Anatomy Class

    Funded Dec 7, 2015

Thank you for donating all these tools for my classroom. It is greatly appreciated that you took your time to send us these dearly needed supplies, including scalpels, scissors, pins, and tweezers. We used them for several dissections and they worked extremely well. I am so happy that our project inspired you to donate these dissection tools. We appreciate your support!

The 4 sets of Mammalian Slides was a big bonus for our Anatomy and Physiology class, because we were able to see what we have been talking about. We observed the tissue on the slides and we were able to notice the difference between the Cardiac Muscle Tissue and the Smooth Muscle Tissue, among many other things. I feel so grateful for the people who helped us get our resources because they have made anatomy come to life.

    Thank you again,”

  • Fun & Fitness With Lacrosse!

    Funded Aug 23, 2015

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

I can't say thank you enough times to really show my appreciation for your kind and generous donations to our Lacrosse project! The girls will be able to do more to prepare for the Spring lacrosse season than ever, and we will be able to use the equipment for years to come!

They can jump rope for cardiovascular training, use the bands for isometric exercises and strength training, the Bosu for balance training, the Yoga mats for yoga and stretching and we will watch the training videos to improve our lacrosse skills. You will see that we will be faster, stronger and reaching higher. citius altius fortius!”

  • Need New Scales for Science Labs!

    Funded Mar 13, 2015

Thank so very much for your kind and generous donations to my classroom. The students will be able to use the electronic scales purchased with your contributions to measure the mass of various items when learning about mass and density throughout the year. The 2 sets of plastic beakers will insure that all 8 lab stations have a complete set to use during class labs. Using plastic beakers is much safer than glass for some of our activities and will save us money in the long run. Thank you again, I would not have all the amazing materials I have to complete so many labs without the support of wonderful people like you.”

    Mrs. Borstel

  • Safety First! in Science

    Funded Oct 24, 2014

Thank you SO much for your kind and gracious donation to my classroom! My students, indeed all the 8th grade students at our school will benefit from your generous donation for years to come. The students are so excited to have new colorful goggles, and that they will be UV sanitized after every use. The Desktop dishwasher will be used to clean glassware and utensils to eliminate contamination between experiments. I am excited to have the shields because it adds an additional layer of safety when young scientists are pouring liquids, reducing accidental splatter.

Because we have these additional safety measures, I feel MUCH more confident and comfortable allowing students participate in science experiments. My students will be engaged, excited participants in their learning. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

  • Physics First!

    Funded Sep 23, 2014

A huge THANK YOU from the very bottom of my heart for your kindness and generosity. I would not be able to provide my students with the materials they need without your help. I really appreciate your support of my classroom and that you share in my vision for teaching kids by activities and labs that allow them to experience science.

My students will be able to store and use hand generated electricity to investigate electrons with the hand generator. With the inclined plane, they will be able to investigate the speed of a marble or small car and each group will be able to investigate density with the equal mass different volume sets. When they evacuate air from the bell jar, they will not hear the bell ring, supporting the idea that sound needs a medium to travel. My students will have many more opportunities for hands on science, thanks to wonderful donors like you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Borstel

Students learn by doing, and the best way to learn science is to do science! My students prefer hands-on learning to lecture and love to get out of their seats and explore chemistry and anatomy through experimentation/dissection. I love my job because I get to watch my student's Oohs' and Ahh's while engaging in science. Thank you in advance for helping our students discover the natural world through Science. I also coach the Girls' Varsity Lacrosse team. We keep growing and this year we have over 50 players! I am so proud of these young ladies, playing hard, constantly learning new tactics and loving the sport of Lacrosse!
