Candy Counts When We Calculate
Funded Mar 20, 2023We are so excited about the "Candy Counts When We Calculate" project. Our third graders have been using Skittles and Sweetarts to create bar graphs and add/subtract using double ten frames. This concrete way of learning motivates them to solve problems using a hands-on approach. Our fourth and fifth graders are having fun with fractions in such a sweet way. With just a package of fun-size candies, students are constructing ratios and probability statements in fraction form.
When I shared with students that these items were donated by generous people who love to see kids thrive and learn, they had lots of questions. They really wanted to know who donated all of the items. It was really heartwarming to have them express how grateful they were to have total strangers care so much about them and their education. One student said, "I want to be able to help students in the future, too!" Another student responded, "I can't believe all this stuff was given to us! It really makes learning fun!"
Our next spring project is coming soon! Students will be working on a beautification project where we will clean up around the school. Again, your donation of cleaning supplies will help us in this endeavor. You paid it forward and now it's our turn. Thanks again for being so very kind.”

Daily Five Keeps Reading Alive!
Funded Oct 5, 2015You would not believe just how excited the students were when they received your donations. One student's response was, " Aww man! Either they really love kids or they are just rich!" Another shouted, "Finally! We have real headphones instead of those old cheap Dollar Tree ones that keep breaking!" Okay, so kids really do say the 'darndest' things! One would have thought that you had donated a lifetime supply of Skittles!
Gone are the days of students sitting in uniformed rows, focused on the chalkboard while the teacher instructs nonstop. Classrooms like ours our filled with learning stations and self-guided activities. The folder game centers that you donated have added an extra special touch to reading comprehension making it much less taxing. The colorful games and interesting lessons keep students engaged wanting more. Meanwhile, there is a quiet corner of kids engrossed in interactive computer lessons that allow them to sing along, laugh along, and learn along with their new wireless headphones. During this time, they almost forget that their knowledge and comprehension is being heightened. It may seem like just cool fun, but the scores show that they are on the right track to academic achievement.
As students move from station to station, the bright array of book boxes are most helpful in keeping areas nice and neat. Each group has their own, 'stuff' so sharing is easy and quarrels are few.
We are looking forward to creating our own fifth grade student blog and posting our personal and academic accomplishments. Hopefully, our next donation of ipads will help us reach our goal.
