Our classroom is a hodgepodge of old, frumpy furniture. We pile books on the floor, making it almost impossible to move around. Our school is implementing a new reading curriculum that includes a large amount of books (yay!)... but my class is in a modular classroom with no storage, bookshelves, or computer desks. I want the students, whom I am going to teach again next year, to feel comfortable physically and mentally as we dive into this new program together. We will use the shelves and the computer desks to organize materials as to create an optimum learning space. I plan to use the lamps so we can turn off the flickering fluorescent lighting and work in a calm, relaxing environment. The rug will be placed by the whiteboard so the students can have a gathering place during mini-lessons, share time, and class meetings. The donations to this project will help to improve my students' level of comfort and achievement. I feel it is important to change the environment to match the needs of the students when changes happen at school. They are growing older, and even though they are blossoming into older, more mature students, the classroom is not. They deserve shelving for their materials, computer desks, and a relaxed environment. I have seen research that states the importance of the surroundings in which children learn directly impacts their growth and achievement. I feel that with cozy bookshelves, computer desks, and lighting, I can make these students feel "at home" in my classroom. Please help me make my dream a reality!
