My students attend a school that receives Title 1 funding and free breakfast and lunch. Gangs, drugs, and violence are always within close proximity. But despite these challenges, my students show up every day eager to be in class, interacting with their friends, and displaying a great deal of energy and enthusiasm for learning. I want every second of their day to be filled with rich experiences both inside the class as well as out. The joy in their faces when outdoor time draws near says a lot to me. To many of them, these 15 to 30 minutes of outdoor time are too precious to waste. Most have never been on a playdate, and lack the valuable social experiences that interacting with kids their age can provide. Many have two working parents or a single parent who is unable to take them to the nearby park or playground because of a demanding work schedule. Little opportunity is given to them to develop crucial gross motor and coordination skills that are needed to thrive.
