Soft starts are a gentle invitation into the day. Implementing soft starts helps set the tone for the rest of the day. Students begin entering the room at 8:00 everyday, and our final bell to begin the school day does not ring until 8:30. Rather than having students complete a worksheet in that thirty minute time slot, they will have the opportunity to select a stem bin to work with. Students can choose to work independently or in a group. When the 8:30 bell rings, students clean up, return to their desks, and we are ready to begin our day! Soft starts give students the opportunity to have structured time to play and communicate with their peers. Play is a vital part of childhood, and it is not given enough importance in upper elementary. This is the age for kids to learn how to work cooperatively with each other. With soft starts, students who need a gentle push to make friends can engage with others in a way that feels safe to them. Students are less likely to feel anxious throughout the day, which leads to more focus during the school day.
