As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, it’s my primary job to build relationships with a diverse group of students. With this project, I plan to provide an environment in my classroom that gives my class a place to come together to grow as a community. Additionally, this project will also provide my students with an alternate learning area where they can go to read, meet in groups, or work independently.
Given my students’ ever changing and challenging lives, it’s more important than ever that my classroom help cultivate the sense of comfort and community that they need to learn and grow. My students thrive in an environment that provides the comfort, community, and routine that they need to be successful. My classroom is currently all white tile that isn’t particularly warm or inviting. With these carpets, my class will be given spaces to feel comfortable to work as a whole group, in small groups, and even by themselves.
The large carpet will be used as our area for daily morning meetings to promote community and build relationships together as a class. Additionally, this carpet will be the central location for whole-class instruction. The smaller carpet will give students a flexible space to either work together or by themselves throughout the day. The colors of the carpets will create a colorful, warm space, but also provide a sense of calm through the neutral colors. I look forward to seeing my students grow individually and together through a space that promotes a positive and supportive community.
