The More You Read, the Better You Read
Funded Oct 19, 2017Thank you so much for your donation to my Donors Choose project, "The More You Read, the Better You Read." The new books have arrived and the students are enjoying them every day!
Each day, students in second grade have time for independent reading and the new books are a popular choice. Many of the books are quickly becoming second grade favorites that I know students will enjoy reading year after year. From familiar faces like Little Critter and Mercy Watson, to new series and chapter books, my students now have a greater variety to choose from.
I believe that finding the right book is the first step to getting them excited about reading, and becoming proficient readers. My goal is for my second graders to love reading! Thank you again for helping me get more books in my classroom to accomplish this goal!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Borland
This classroom project was brought to life by The DonorsChoose.org Community and 6 other donors.Flexible Seating for Success
Funded Oct 7, 2017I want to say Thank You again for your generous donation to my classroom and let you know a little more about how your donation has impacted my students.
It all started when our custodian, Mr. Troy, delivered 6 large boxes to our classroom. I explained to the kids that we were getting 6 new wobble stools to add to our flexible seating options because some very generous people had decided to donate to our classroom. To say they were excited is putting it mildly! As we opened the boxes and assembled the stools, I attempted to answer their questions. Yes, you can sit on it. No, you cannot stand on it. Yes, we will take turns. Yes, they will stay in our classroom.
The question that came up the most was, "Why did they give these to us?" I told them about Donors Choose classroom projects and explained that there are a lot of people out there that want them to succeed. It took them a while for that to sink in. The idea that people - strangers - cared about their learning was a new concept.
We use the stools every day and they have become a popular choice. I have one student who prefers the wobble stool over any other seating option. He says it helps his body "get the wiggles out" while he's working. Whenever he chooses the wobble seat, he likes to announce, "Thank you Donors!" I couldn't agree more.
So, thank you, again. Thank you for the wobble stools, but also for teaching my students that there are people in the world who care about helping others.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Borland
Read Every Day, Lead a Better Life
Funded Dec 3, 2014I want to say THANK YOU once again for your generous support of my classroom project and let you know about the wonderful impact your donation is making in my classroom.
All of the materials arrived on the same day and it felt like Christmas morning as we unwrapped everything. At first, the kids were probably most excited about seeing the colorful cushions! They couldn't wait to try them out and I quickly realized that I'll soon need more. They are definitely a hit. Next, I unwrapped the bookshelf. As I added the new books, I could hear the kids eagerly discussing which book they wanted to read first. Last, I unrolled the new reading carpet and set it up in our reading area. They were "oohing and aaahing" over the vibrant colors and genre illustrations. One little girl announced, "Mrs. Borland, that carpet is amazing!" I couldn't agree more!
All of the items are used on a daily basis. In my classroom we have "Read to Self" time. The students grab their book box and choose a spot in the classroom to read. The addition of the cushions and carpet have made choosing a spot much easier. As one of the kids told me, "When I'm comfortable, I can read way longer!" Watching the students absorbed in reading during Read to Self time is one of the greatest parts of my job.
Thank you again, for helping to show my second graders that they are supported by a community of avid readers just like them.
Read every day, lead a better life!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Borland
