I teach seventh grade language arts and reading in a Title I school district. 65 % of our students come from low income and poverty level homes. Reading is an amazing escape for our students to experience new worlds and to learn about new things. Our school challenges our students through our Accelerated Reader program to read 500,000 words or more from August to March. Last year, we had over 15,000,000 words read from our seventh graders alone! We require our students to read and test on fiction and nonfiction titles. We reward our students with a trip and a day off from school. Last year, we took our students to a local YMCA camp for meeting their reading goals. Our school is located in a rural area and sometimes the only way our students learn about things outside of our town is from reading books. I have students requesting new titles everyday! This makes me so happy to see them wanting to read on their own, especially in a time where technology is taking over. Our students do not have access to computers on a daily basis. So reading is one way for them to acquire new information and learn things they normally wouldn't.
