As a math interventionist, my students consists of those that struggle with math and are considered the bottom quartile. Some are English Language Learners, ESE students, students that have failed a grade or two in elementary school or simply lacking grade-level skills.
I work with 3rd grade to 5th grade students in a small group atmosphere. Often, these kids fade into the background in large classes and fall farther behind. They benefit from small group or one-on -one instruction during math intervention.
In my classroom, they are able to get individualized help based on their needs. My goal is to develop their confidence and motivation through explicit and fun instruction. I want them to feel they are "good" at math and capable of breaking the stigma that math is "scary". I want to solidly lay the foundation for them so they can be successful as they move on to the upper levels of math.
