My 3rd grade students are moving from Primary to Intermediate grades. They are emerging readers and writers, ready to tackle the world. Many are from low economic backgrounds and are language learners. They come from homes that see challenges beyond their control. We are working to set up our classroom with different places to work, learn, study with books and use manipulatives. My students love the opportunity to choose their most comfortable and safe place to learn within our classroom. Flexible seating (students choosing their own type of seat to suit their needs) is a growing trend to help students understand how they learn and focus based on choices. My students are movers and shakers and a flexible seating arrangement will help better suit their needs of movement. Having the power to choose where they sit provides an atmosphere with options and keeps the focus on learning. Hokki stools and stand up desks allow students chances to move while they learn, which helps reduce behavior issues, stress and provides a sense of ownership for their classroom. I would also like to have a low table with cushions for students who are more comfortable working and learning on the floor.
