Fashion Forward in a Small Town

I just want to again say thank you for donating toward resources for my fashion design class. This is only the second year that I have offered this course to students here at Buffalo High School, so materials have been scarce. However, with your contribution, we are finally seeing things begin to happen. As our journals arrived, students were each given one to carry with them so that they can design whenever they are inspired. Students are also given opportunities to search magazines for items that inspire them as designers and place these pictures in their journals. They will journal all year and include not only original designs, but the fabric samples and pictures of that design inspiration as well. We have not yet used the videos because it is not time to cover that particular material, but the videos will definitely help address topics that we cannot cover without them.

The students were so amazed that someone felt compelled to donate these materials for our class. The general reaction of the class was, "Wow! These markers are so amazing to work with!" and, "The journals are so nice and just right to carry with us." One student even commented that she feels like a "real fashion person" having these items to use.

My class will be using all of their inspiration and rough sketches to turn into full designs of accessories and garments later this year. Depending on their developing skills, we might even be able to take some of these design ideas and create the actual garment. That is my ultimate goal for the class. I feel that the skills they learn will be skills they can apply to their lives for a very long time, so the donations for this project will last them a lifetime. That is quite the impact!
