  • Your Voice Counts: The 2022-23 California Young Readers Medal Project

    Funded Feb 7, 2022

The California Young Reader Medal nominees are some of our students' favorite books every year. These books offer students a chance to voice their opinions as they vote for the medal winners while enjoying some of the best new books available.

These books are a great collection from diverse points of view. We will get to spend some time looking a each of them both for pleasure and with a critical eye. The voting process not only allows the students a voice in the process but also asks them to think about and express what they think makes a "good" book.

None of this would have been possible without your donation. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Welch

  • Connecting Students with Authentic Indigenous Voices

    Funded Jul 4, 2021

As the school librarian I strive to share the stories of a wide variety of people with our students. The books in the "Connecting Students with Authentic Indigenous Voices" collection have been a great start to new conversations regarding different cultures and communities. Our students were intrigued by this new picture of Native Americans as a vibrant current part of our national fabric.

Many of our students are immigrants themselves and related to the concepts of being tied to their roots by food and language. The stories lead them to think about the experiences of people they never thought much about. We tied in videos of powwows and bird singing, a tradition of our local tribes. We also used the books as a starting point for a discussion of land acknowledgements and students expressed interest in writing their own original land acknowledgement to show there appreciation and respect to the original residents of the area we now inhabit.

None of this would have been possible without your generous donation! Thank you!!!”

  • The Balancing Act: Keeping Students From Losing Themselves Online

    Funded May 27, 2021

The books we received through your donation to my Balancing Act: Keeping Students from Losing Themselves Online project have already had a huge impact on our entire student body. I have been reading books from the collection to classes in the library. The Kindergarten students were captivated by the Goodnight iPad story and made connections to the importance of tech-free time in their lives. The two titles that I can see making the greatest impact so far are Unplugged by Gordon Korman and When Charlie McButton Lost Power by Suzanne Collins. I read them to 1st and 2nd grade respectively and they lead to lively discussions of the importance of downtime and considering how our actions both online and in-person affect others around us.

The students are also enjoying reading the other books independently and checking them out to read in class or at home. I look forward to having the opportunity to share even more of these titles with students as time allows. I will continue to use them as a catalyst for discussions on the responsible use of technology.

Thank you for providing these books for our students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Welch
