  • Help My Students Read More!

    Funded Feb 14, 2014

Thank you so much for donating to our cause. My students are in such desperate need of reading material suitable to them that they just give up so many times. Now I will have 8 new books for them to choose from to give a wider range of books to choose from.

As in this case, most of my students were able to raise a good deal of the money on their own, but only with the help of matching donors. I think it means that much more to them to be able to contribute in their small amounts to make a larger impact; being able to get the books they enjoy.

This will be very helpful in getting more of my students to read. They talk about these books so often & now its be word-of-mouth that they are encouraging others to read.

    Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Carrie Wan

  • Help Us Earn College Credit!

    Funded Jan 16, 2014

My students were very excited to receive brand new, updated Advanced Placement test booklets with the test information they need to know in order to pass. The test itself has changed recently and now our outdated AP test booklets are ridiculously useless. I would need to require my students to each spend $15+ on their own booklet, but then I would need to do this next year as well. These students just don't have that kind of money and would really need to keep their money for other things, such as breakfast. I know some of them find spending $15 not very daunting, but I know plenty of them would and would also be very quiet about this difficulty.

We are using these booklets in many ways, especially for studying for the Exam in May. Students are reading the quick overview of history to study and are using the practice tests to help practice for the test itself and then focus on their weaknesses to improve.

This definitely helped my students in boosting their chances of passing the AP Exam and therefore giving more students the college credit for the course. It can be very difficult to give these students all the tools and resources necessary to pass this test and now they have an independent study resource that has lots of tips and tools I do not know of myself.

This will greatly affect these students for years to come, especially with getting their foot into college and hopefully finishing college faster and for far less.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Carrie Wan

Our school is in a poor neighborhood. Many of my students have parents who did not complete high school or even middle school. Our students face many challenges, including gangs, violence, and poverty. I am amazed by my students' perseverance and resilience. I want to prepare as many of them for college as I can and see them be successful. My AP students are dedicated, hard-working, enthusiastic, and motivated students. These students are college-bound and really want to do well on the Exam. They know that college is expensive and want to minimize their costs in any way, which is one reason they are working so hard in class. Many of them have older siblings who tell them that the community colleges have more students than they can teach, and many students struggle to enroll in even one class. The more college credit they can earn in high school, the easier it will be for them once they get there.
