Each year my students learn the basics of fine art photography and graphic design using real cameras and photo editing software. This unit culminates with a visit to our local humane society where students photograph actual local animals in need of homes with our classroom cameras. These photos are brought back to the classroom where they are used to generate posters advertising the animal's adoption. These posters are printed with our large-format classroom printer and hung in various spots the community to promote awareness and encourage pet adoption. In order to make this project a reality, my students need batteries to power our classroom cameras and ink and photo paper with which to print our animal adoption photos. These materials are expensive in the quantities we need for such a project, and we rely on the generosity of donors everywhere to help us stock our supplies. This project is extremely meaningful to the students. Pet overpopulation is a major issue in our community, and students feel great satisfaction in providing a service that might help alleviate the suffering of abandoned and stray animals. Through this project and the use of the materials requested here, students will be able to use the skills gained in the classroom in composition and design, combine those skills with creativity and imagination, and produce something that makes a difference in their community.
