Wine and Canvas parties have become a popular way for adults to "treat yo self". It's a chance to "escape" by getting a little messy in a flurry of exciting colors, build relationships and memories over food and fellowship, and walk away with a sense of accomplishment after having created something beautiful. Unfortunately, children in poverty rarely get the chance to escape the harsh reality of their circumstances to enjoy the freedom of creativity. Bob Ross once said, "I can't think of anything more rewarding than being able to express yourself to others through painting." Therefore, as part of our school's Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), students may "purchase" the Carrots and Canvas experience (using the school currency they've earned by adhering to our student code). All supplies for this reoccurring event were provided several years ago through a DonorsChoose.org grant, but we’re running low on supplies. Fully funding this grant will enable us to continue (over the next two years) to provide a rare opportunity to treat 80+ students to the joy of painting with friends after school! EVENT SYNOPSIS: Before we get messy, our school offers the students a healthy snack (we're all about being a Strong School that promotes a well-balanced lifestyle). This grant will provide the canvases, brushes, and paint students need to participate in a guided painting lesson (led by yours truly). Students are aided by teacher volunteers who coach them through my step-by-step instructions. While some students keep their artwork, many of them use it as an opportunity to make a meaningful gift for a family member (at zero cost to them).
