Funded Aug 10, 2023As 5th graders, most students come in excited and ready to finish elementary with a bang. But they are also uneasy because they know BIG CHANGE is coming their way. Now that we are approaching the end of the first semester, anxiety levels are rising every time they look at the regressive count down on the board. Students are asking more questions about middle school as well as applying for/choosing which middle school to go to. The stakes are high and change is approaching faster than they were expecting.
The students are extremely grateful and excited with their new books, "The New Kid". This class set of books is intended not only to have students practice their reading skills, especially fluency and prosody, but it is also intended to strengthen their social emotional health. This book will help get a snippet of what social life in middle school could be like. The academics are only part of it and thats what students as of most. But they forget about peer relations, self identity, conflicts resolution, etc. And I believe that these areas are the toughest parts of the BIG CHANGE that students endure.
Due to your generosity, my students will get to empathize and learn about a middle schoolers life as "The New Kid".”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Vazquez
