Reading books are typical for every school. However, my students need more than just a textbook full of stories. My students struggle with reading and are currently behind their peers in class. When reading is a struggle, children often become frustrated and do not want to read. Not my kiddos! They want to read every minute I give them. These magazines will provide an opportunity to read a magazine at their reading level. The magazines are new and fresh each week bringing an element of surprise for students to uncover. My project will not only help students improve literacy and comprehension, it will also put magazines into the hands of over 40 children each week! Students work best when they are interested in the topic. The magazines are different each week which provides students with a variety of topics and engaging teaching activities. I love hearing my students excited to tell their families about what they read about in school that day. The Scholastic magazine also has a digital component. This allows students to have the passages read to them as needed. Students can follow along and enjoy the stories without fear they may not know all the words. This digital portion is also key as I have students who are working remotely from home. Currently I only have a few students working from home, while most of my caseload is taking part in traditional schooling by coming into the building daily. As the number of Covid-19 cases rise in my community it is possible that we will be asked to teach remotely. These magazines include a digital subscription that would ensure that all my students have new reading material at their fingertips each week!
