Lower elementary has been my forte for 13 years, but this year I am making a jump to upper elementary. Sadly, I have seen the opportunity for hands-on learning experiences seem to decrease as students get older. My goal is to make sure this doesn't happen! I want to ensure that my students are filled with enthusiasm and a love for mathematics. I want my students to understand that we all must learn math and math is so much more that memorizing facts. It is thinking! These math centers I have requested will be used on both a daily and weekly basis to give students hands-on, workshop model inspired math instruction. Due to switching grades, my materials are scarce and do not apply to upper elementary. By providing these materials, students will have a chance to practice skills learned in class both independently and in small groups. The centers and workshop time will provide opportunities for confidence building, active participation, meaningful conversation, flexible grouping, and many 1 on 1 teaching moments. Multiplication, division, fractions, and rectangular arrays are exciting and challenging topics for 3rd graders. I believe these hands-on centers and engaging activities will help my students grow in these areas and more!
